Three generations of farmers see many changes

Four and a half year old Trevor Sladky likes farm life.

"He does enjoy helping, enjoys riding the tractor and being on the farm," his father, Kevin, said.

Kevin wouldn't mind it a bit if Trevor followed in his footsteps and became a farmer. After all, it's a career that not only suits him just fine, but it's also the career of his father, Ron, and his grandfather, Bernie.

The three generations of Sladky farmers have been working the land for more than 60 years.

Thirty-Six Second Graders Visit Ag Department
Thirty-six Superior South School second graders visited the Superior Ag Education Department recently to observe National Ag Day. Members of the Superior FFA conducted a program called, “Food for America”. Cooperating teachers were Mrs. Diane Kile and Mrs. Anne-Marie Giger. — Full Story »
 
The Ravenna FFA Chapter
The Ravenna FFA Chapter competed at the District Leadership Skills event held at The Leadership Center in Aurora. Competing for Ravenna was Ag Demonstration team consisting of Alex Behrendt, Garrett Irvine & Mark Chramosta. Also a team in Ag Demonstration was Josh Boardman and Paul Bauer. Both Ag demonstration teams received blue ribbons. Members that gave a speech were Shelby Behrendt, Liz Deines, Tara Dethlefs, and Torri Dethlefs. Torri qualified for the state contest in Sr. Public Speaking with a first place finish. Cold Storage Facilities Now Eligible For USDA Facility Loan Program
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today said that the Farm Storage Facility Loan program has been amended to allow producers to build cold storage facilities to store their fresh fruits and vegetables. This program is part of USDA's 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' initiative and uses discretionary authority provided by the 2008 Farm Bill authorizing the eligibility of cold storage facilities for fruits and vegetables. — Full Story »
 
USDA Asks for Comments on Final Environmental Assessment
On September 26, 2006, a legal settlement was signed between the National Wildlife Federation and FSA that limited the frequency of haying on CRP lands to once every ten years and grazing to once every five years in Kansas; with a suspension of haying and grazing during the primary nesting season (April 15 to July 15). The settlement stipulated that if a change to the frequency of haying and grazing or the primary nesting season (PNS) dates is desired, then an Environmental Assessment would be prepared that identifies the potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts of such a change.  — Full Story »
